Training for IronMan 70.3

No, not the whole thing; just the cycle. Which is 90km return-trip, and it’s not the pleasant route they could have chosen.

I can’t remember when I started training for it, but it wasn’t long ago (perhaps 2 to 3 weeks) and I had delusions about doing the 90km race in 3h00. I would like to place on record that it’s not going to happen. This morning, I rode 51.3km after a pretty hectic alcohol-filled weekend. Mostly Heineken, but with a lot of other things and food mixed in there. Unkief. So I decided to do a 50km ride just to see, seeing as IronMan 70.3 is just over a month away.

The aim of the ride was to TRY and do it at an average 25km/h. I did finish it in 24km/h average, which is not horrible considering the goal. However, considering that I have to almost double the distance and do it 5km/h FASTER, a 3h00 IronMan is not possible given the time I have left to train.

So there’s a change of strategy. IronMan is mid January. Two or three weeks after that is VW Herald (105km) in PE. Two or three weeks after that is Daily Dispatch (100km) on the same route as IronMan 70.3. Finally two to three weeks after that is the Argus (109km). Last year I kicked a 3h31 Argus (*cough* we won’t mention 6h00 or so this year). I think with all those races, I should aim for a 3h00 Argus.

That is the new strategy; Operation 3h00 Argus.
